Aracharcharch Survives Leg Break But Career Doesn’t

The racing career of Archarcharch is over after the colt broke his front left leg in the Kentucky Derby.

He was sent for scans after clearly running hampered throughout the race but they didn’t initially show up all of the damage.

It wasn’t until vets began inserting pins into the leg that the full extent of the damage was discovered with serve degradation of cartilage surrounding the break.

Owner Bob Yagos said immediately that the Arkansas Derby winner would not race again with the risk of re-injury far too great.

Amazingly Yagos believes that the injury occurred as they jumped from the gates when Archarcharch appeared to stumble.

Despite that he still completely the trip and even beat home four of his rivals across the line.

The early end to his career see’s him finish with three victories form seven starts including the Southwest Stakes and total prize money of more than $800,000.

As he’s a colt, if he can fully recover a new life in stud looms as the likely scenario.

The 137th Kentucky Derby was won by Animal Kingdom ahead of Nehro and Mucho Macho Man.
